MyFitnessPal vs Lose It!: What's Free, What's Paid, What Differs

By the Solin teamPublished

MyFitnessPal and Lose It! are closer than most comparisons say. Both free plans are a calorie log. Both list barcode, photo and voice logging as paid features, and Premium is $79.99 a year on each. So a free barcode scanner is no longer a reason to pick one. Choose based on what's left: how you pay, macro goals (protein, carbs and fat), meal planning and a coach.

The free barcode scanner: gone on one, going on the other

MyFitnessPal made barcode scanning Premium only on October 1, 2022. In 2023, one Reddit user wrote: "I'm another vote for lose it. I use the intermittent fasting schedule. And I'm also a little salty MFP took away the barcode scanner from the free version".

Now Lose It! is moving it too. Its App Store listing puts "Barcode Scanner" under "PREMIUM PLAN FEATURES", and its help center says "Some free members will still have access as we transition, while others will not."

So if the free scanner is your reason to switch, check your own account first.

Where the two apps really differ

How you pay

MyFitnessPal Premium is $19.99 a month or $79.99 a year, and ads go away while you're on it. Lose It!'s plans page lists Premium at $79.99 a year and Lifetime at $299.99 once, with no refunds on Lifetime. Lose It! also removes ads for a one-time fee. So it comes down to how you like to pay: by the month, by the year or once.

Macro goals

On MyFitnessPal's free plan, you can set calorie and macro goals by percentage. Goals in grams need Premium. Lose It!'s App Store listing puts macro tracking (protein, carbs, fat) under Premium.

Planning meals

MyFitnessPal's Meal Planner and grocery lists come with Premium+, at $24.99 a month or $99.99 a year. On Lose It!, planning means logging food for future days, a Premium feature, plus meal targets for your macros.

A coach

MyFitnessPal's Nutrition Coach is for Premium and Premium+ members on iOS, in English, in six countries. Lose It!'s pages don't list a coach.

If you lift, here's what we'd add

If you strength train, you're probably counting protein in grams and short on time to plan meals. A log helps. Help that knows your log helps more. That's what we built Solin Prime to do.

Dash, Prime's AI nutrition coach, knows your goals, your food preferences, the last week of what you've logged and your last three weeks of workouts. Out to eat and can't decide? Send Dash a photo of the menu, and you'll get a suggested order.

Craving pizza or brownies? Prime makes you a high-protein version, as many as you like. And the AI plans your week of meals around your goals, then turns the plan into a list you order on Instacart.

Macro tracking works by photo, barcode or voice, with goals in grams worked out from your profile. It's all one plan, no add-ons: $12.99 a month or $77.99 a year ($6.50 a month). That's a little under a year of Premium on either app, and the meal plan comes with it.

It all lives in the Solin app, next to your workouts if you've joined a challenge from a creator you love. Prime gives you 20% cash back on every challenge you buy.

Questions about MyFitnessPal and Lose It!

Which is cheaper, MyFitnessPal or Lose It!?

For a year of Premium, neither: it's $79.99 on both at list price. Paying by the month costs more: 12 months of MyFitnessPal at $19.99 comes to $239.88. Lose It!'s $299.99 Lifetime is the price of almost four years of Premium. Lose It! also says it adjusts prices for promotions, so you may see a lower offer in the app.

Is there a tracker that also plans your meals and coaches you?

Solin Prime does both. It plans your week of meals and comes with Dash, an AI nutrition coach who knows your log. New members get 7 days free.

Want the help, not just the log?

Log today, get next week planned, and ask Dash what to order tonight. Prime comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
