This recipe is a delightful medley of textures and flavors, combining lean protein, melty cheese, and the vibrant taste of freshly simmered tomatoes, herbs and spices.
INGREDIENTS
4 oz Ground Turkey (lean)
1 oz Part-Skim Mozzarella Cheese
1/4 cup Whole Wheat Breadcrumbs
1 large Egg White
1/2 cup Tomato Sauce
1 medium Fresh Tomato
1 tsp Garlic Powder
1 tsp Dried Basil
Salt and Pepper (to taste)
PREPARATION
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a bowl, combine the ground turkey, egg white, breadcrumbs, garlic powder, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined to avoid overworking the turkey.
Shape the mixture into a patty roughly 1/2-inch thick. Place the patty on the prepared baking sheet.
Bake the turkey patty in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.
While the patty bakes, prepare the fresh tomato sauce by finely dicing the medium tomato. If desired, mix with a little extra garlic powder, basil, salt, and pepper for an extra kick.
Once the patty is nearly done, remove the baking sheet briefly from the oven to add the mozzarella slice on top of the patty. Return to the oven for an additional 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and gooey.
Serve the turkey burger topped with the fresh tomato sauce, and enjoy a delicious meal that is both crispy on the outside and melty on the inside.
