Classic Beef Burger with Caramelized Onions
Sizzling lean beef patty topped with sweet caramelized onions and served on a toasted whole-grain bun for a savory and satisfying bite.
INGREDIENTS
8 oz 93% lean ground beef
0.5 medium yellow onion
0.5 tsp extra virgin olive oil
0.5 whole wheat burger bun
1 leaf butter lettuce
1 slice tomato
0.25 tsp sea salt
0.25 tsp black pepper
1 tsp Dijon mustard
PREPARATION
Thinly slice the yellow onion into half-moons.
Heat the olive oil in a small non-stick skillet over medium-low heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes until they are soft and deep golden brown. Set aside.
While onions cook, gently shape the ground beef into one large, thick patty. Avoid overworking the meat to keep it tender.
Season both sides of the patty evenly with sea salt and black pepper.
Heat a cast-iron skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the patty and sear for 4-5 minutes per side for medium doneness.
During the last minute of cooking, place the bun halves cut-side down on the skillet to lightly toast.
Spread Dijon mustard on the bottom bun, then layer with the lettuce and tomato.
Place the cooked beef patty on top, pile on the caramelized onions, and finish with the top bun.
