SURGE is designed to increase maximal strength, lifting efficiency, and confidence under heavier loads through a structured progression built around the 5x5 method and principles of progressive overload, intensity management, and fatigue control.
The foundation of this phase is simple: lift heavy, move well, and progressively challenge the body over time. Our primary movements will center around major compound lifts such as the squat, bench press, deadlift, pull-up, shoulder press, and barbell row. These exercises allow us to train multiple muscle groups at once, develop total-body strength, and create measurable progress from week to week.
Rather than simply trying to add more weight every session, SURGE uses an RPE-based progression system. RPE, or Rate of Perceived Exertion, measures how challenging a set feels based on how many quality reps you could still perform. This allows each athlete to train at the appropriate intensity for their individual strength level while still following the same program.
Throughout the six weeks, both training intensity and volume are strategically manipulated so that we can build strength without accumulating unnecessary fatigue.
Week 1 — Benchmark
We begin with 5 sets of 5 reps to establish your baseline. The goal is to find challenging but controlled working weights that can be progressed throughout the phase. Technique, consistency, and quality movement come first.
Week 2 — Build
We continue with the 5x5 structure and begin progressively increasing load. The goal is to build on Week 1 while maintaining strong mechanics and leaving room for continued progression.
Week 3 — Overload
This is our heaviest full-volume 5x5 week. Intensity increases and later sets will approach RPE 9, meaning the weight should feel very challenging while still allowing approximately one quality rep in reserve. This week creates the strongest training stimulus of the phase before we begin reducing fatigue.
Week 4 — Peak Preparation
We transition from 5x5 to 5 sets of 3 reps. Reducing the reps lowers overall training volume while allowing us to continue handling heavy weight. This is intentional: we want to maintain strength and intensity while allowing accumulated fatigue to come down before PR Week.
Week 5 — PR Week
Everything we have built over the previous four weeks comes together here. Each set gradually increases in intensity until the final PR attempt reaches RPE 10 — a true maximal effort with no additional quality reps remaining. The goal is to demonstrate the strength developed throughout SURGE and establish a new benchmark moving forward.
Week 6 — Deload
Following PR Week, volume and intensity are significantly reduced. This gives the body an opportunity to recover from the accumulated demands of the previous five weeks while continuing to practice the major movements with excellent technique. Recovery is part of progress, and this week prepares you to enter the next training phase stronger and more prepared.
The goal of SURGE is not simply to lift heavier for the sake of lifting heavier. It is to teach your body to produce more force, become more efficient under load, and progressively handle weights that once felt challenging.
Every week has a purpose.
Benchmark. Build. Overload. Peak. Perform. Recover.
By the end of these six weeks, the goal is simple: you should be measurably stronger than when you started.
This is SURGE.
Strength is going up.
