Because you're reading this, I'd assume you already strength train a decent amount. You're reasonably fit, you've got some muscle on you, and you're not fresh to the gym. You're exactly the type of person I wrote this program for — someone who's more athletic than their body reflects. Core muscles are the separating factor between impressive and memorable.
I lived in that spot for years. A body that was strong enough for everything I asked of it, but still no true separating aspect. I was doing some crunches and maybe a plank at the end of the workout, yet seeing no difference.
Two things I had backwards. The first: I treated abs as optional, yet every other muscle I wanted to grow as mandatory. Second: my abs were stronger than I thought, but my hip flexors were embarrassingly weak.
You see, if you watch someone fail at V-ups or hanging leg raises, their abs are usually fine — it's their hip flexors that quit. They didn't know that, and neither did I, so I kept crunching and planking with no real change.
V-LINE trains both. Every workout touches the hip flexors, and it focuses on the parts of your abs that can't be built without them.
Here's what most people get wrong. Crunches and sit-ups hit the upper abs — the part that shows first anyway — and not much else. Do a thousand of them and you've trained the muscle you needed least. Meanwhile the two that actually change your outline get skipped: the lower abs, which need working hip flexors to load at all, and the transverse abdominis, the deep layer underneath that pulls your waist in like a belt. That's the one nobody trains and everybody wants.
Then there's the oblique problem. Load your side work heavy enough and the obliques grow, and thick obliques make your waist wider, not narrower. Great if you're an NFL linebacker. I'm guessing that's not why you're here. So obliques get trained for control in this program, not for size.
Get those right and the line comes in. Some of us think that's the whole secret — everybody already has the Brad Pitt stomach under there, they just need to train intelligently enough to uncover it.
Six days a week, short sessions, done after whatever you already had scheduled. It's a mix of heavy and light days, with a test every Monday to track against your baseline. The whole program can be done at home, but it works best in a gym after your strength work. Either way, this stack has proven itself over and over — in my own training and with the people I've trained alongside. Follow it, and it doesn't just change the appearance of your midsection. It builds a discipline no one can deny. Because everyone knows what it means when a guy takes his shirt off and he's actually diced.
Now for the hard truth. If you want to actually see your abs, two things matter more than anything else: your protein and your calories. If you don't do those things, then I can't guarantee shit. But if you hit your macro goal and hold your calories where they need to be, you cannot fail.
Solin sells a high-protein nutrition guide built for exactly this problem. It isn't mine — I'm working on my own — and it isn't part of this program, but it will help you find more creative ways to hit your protein every day without blowing your calories.
This program is not built for first-time gym-goers, or for people who can't prioritize their eating. If that's you, find another program. Truly no hard feelings. I want guys who have significant gym time under their belt and want the work they've been putting in to finally show. I want guys who won't quit on me and will have a sick transformation photo at week six. I want guys who want to take their shirt off in a room and feel the respect land without a word being said. Because that's what this is really about at the end of the day — respect from other people, but mostly from yourself.
Six weeks. Commit to it or don't.
