Growing up, I was always an athletic kid despite my lanky, scrawny body that many may have dismissed as ungainly. I never thought a muscular physique, not to mention legitimate functional strength were ever in the cards for someone built like me. Even when I joined the ranks of professional skiers, traveling the world to compete against world class athletes, I always thought I’d remain looking like someone whose physique belied his athletic ability. At 17 years old at a height of 6’3” weighing a meager 145 lbs, I quickly realized that I was in desperate need of additional strength in order to have a prayer of competing against the grown men in my competitive field, and that technique alone would not suffice. Little did I know at the time, that this pursuit of strength would give me my most valuable tool in transforming this skinny, gangly rack of bones, into a physique that would make my 17 year old self unrecognizable to my physique 3 years and 35 lbs of lean mass later. I am a true believer that form should reflect function, that aesthetics should not be just a matter of vanity, but a marker of function and athletic prowess.
